Tancredo Update

Tom Tancredo probed General Petraeus about gang infiltration into the US Army in the general's latest period of questioning over progress in Iraq. A problem recently spotlighted by Stars and Stripes, military literature, has grown significantly, and as Tancredo points out, is extensive training made possible by American taxpayers. The report of Tancredo's probing claims various news agencies have also documented the increase in gang activity inside the military, and even in some cases to have stretched to graffiti at US military bases in Iraq.

In response to calls to boycott the 2008 Olympics because of China's human rights violations, Tancredo proposed legislation that would impose a trade embargo upon China. He suggests such legislation as a more quality way to effect change because such an embargo would hit china "in its pocketbooks". However, such an embargo is unlikely because China is one of, if not the, the US' greatest trade partners.

I think Tancredo is wrong to try to create legislation to create an embargo to prevent all further trade and investment with China. Tancredo does not like the way China is dealing with Tibet. He also wants China to improve their treatment of their own people. He is calling for a boycott of the Olympics.

China is approximately 5 times larger in population than the US and has a completely different culture. China is growing economically each and every year and will soon be the largest economic force in the world. It is extremely inappropriate for the US with only 6% of the Worlds population to insist that everyone behave like we do. Keep in mind that the US puts a greater percentage of its citizens in prison than any other country in the world. Do we really want all countries to increase our prison population like we do?

Tancredo does not seem to understand what can happen if you put your hand in a tigers’ cage. Pushing China could create a backlash way beyond anything the world has ever seen.

Tancredo said, “Boycotting the Olympic opening ceremony will send a symbolic message, but will do little in practical terms to change the behavior of the Chinese government,” said Tancredo. “If we are serious about changing China’s behavior we have to hit the regime where it hurts – in the pocketbook.” I say good luck Congressman.

It is interesting that China rarely reacts to people like Tancredo. China simply continues to build its economic wealth and mostly stays out of military intervention around the world. For today, they are not trying to control the world. However, I believe they will be the world's largest economy within 20 years. They save their money and we spend more than 100% of ours.

It will be a dangerous world should the US ever try to put this mouse in a corner so I doubt we ever will.
